The bridgebuilder Foundation e.V., in cooperation with the Kantorka Foundation, supported a project to restore an ecologically significant water body. The aim was to improve local water storage and promote biodiversity by desilting and expanding the pond.
Location: Upendo Farm, Kitale, Kenya
Period: 2024
Project Volume: 979,950 KSH (approx. 7,000 EUR)
Partner Organizations: OTEPIC
Objective
The goal was to restore a heavily silted pond on the grounds of Upendo Farm. By removing sediment and expanding the pond, water storage capacity was increased, water quality was improved, and the ecological function of the pond was reestablished.
Implementation
The pond was desilted, cleared of pollutants, and enlarged. The measure was carried out with active participation from the local community.
Impact
-
Water Storage: Restoration of the pond’s original holding capacity.
-
Biodiversity: Improved habitats for plants and animals.
-
Water Quality: Reduction of sediment and pollutant loads.
-
Climate Adaptation: Contribution to the regulation of local water cycles.
-
Community Responsibility: Involving the population fostered environmental awareness and ownership.
